Here's what resveratrol is, where the newest science is pointing, and the one thing that makes all the difference to whether your body can actually use it.

What Is Resveratrol?

In a 2025 randomised, placebo-controlled trial involving 132 women over 40 — with Australian researchers among the team — eight weeks of trans-resveratrol was associated with improvements in visible signs of skin ageing.[2] A well-designed human trial reporting positive skin outcomes is exactly the kind of evidence the field had been waiting for.

Metabolic and inflammatory markers. A 2026 umbrella review — a study of studies, pooling 45 systematic reviews of human trials — found supportive signals for resveratrol across a range of outcomes, particularly anti-inflammatory and metabolic markers.[3] Umbrella reviews sit near the top of the evidence hierarchy, so this is a meaningful step up from single small studies.

The honest framing is upbeat but grounded: resveratrol is an active, fast-moving research area, the newest and best-designed studies are encouraging, and researchers in the field are optimistic about where it's heading.[2,3]

The Bioavailability Story — and Its Hopeful Twist

For years, the biggest puzzle about resveratrol was this: it works beautifully in the lab, but your body absorbs and clears it very quickly, so relatively little intact resveratrol reaches the bloodstream.[1] This "resveratrol paradox" — real effects despite low blood levels — was the field's central head-scratcher.

The exciting recent development is a possible answer. Researchers increasingly believe the key may lie in your gut microbiome: when your gut bacteria break resveratrol down, they produce metabolites that may be the "missing link" explaining the positive results seen in clinical studies.[2] In other words, the value may not be about the intact compound circulating in your blood at all — it may be about what your gut microbes make from it.   • Trans-resveratrol is the studied form. Research generally uses trans-resveratrol specifically, which is the form the positive trials have focused on.
  • Support your gut. Given the emerging microbiome angle, a fibre-rich, plant-forward diet that supports a healthy gut may be part of the bigger picture — though this is still an area of active study.
  • Red wine isn't the answer. The amount of resveratrol in wine is very small; you'd need implausible, unhealthy quantities to reach study-level doses. This is a compound to think about separately from alcohol.[1]
